gay ghosts is the second coming of an exiled witch who set herself and that hedonistic city ablaze; ‘manifold twin’ is the destructive pinnacle of that perfect fiery madness.

Click the link above, the download is free, and the tape is available from antique pony member Derek McArthur’s Glasgow-based cassette family Hikikomori – which is set to release Heroin Party‘s debut and an upcoming set of songs from UUUUUU (who is wonderful and was featured on our 2k12 best of).

make everything okay full size
Big thanks to everyone who helped make this year great. 2k12 was uncomfortably transitional and I appreciate the support and love, y’all are the best. So here are the albums that made everything okay; there are no rankings as they inhabit similar summer homes within me.

ivory weeds – we all become

November 13, 2012

Sorry about the stagnated content flow of is almost forever over and everything will soon be normal again. Until then, I wanted to share an album that is soft and serene and truly wonderful.

There’s something strikingly intimate about We All Become, the way it houses panorama-like texture while complementing the internal spaces it originated from. In the words of Ivory Weeds himself: “This album is LoFi for the reason that it captures not only the song that I am recording, but also the moment in which it exists. Each time a song is played it is new in that moment, it will never exist again in the same way, in the same feeling..”

deimos phobos – feelings

October 1, 2012

Company found and sought after. The lissajous curve of desire, distress, divinity, indifference. Slumber for solace; an enduring moment of harmony. Steps from normality. Celestial bounds from reality. Our calves substituted by cognitive existence, hurdles swapped for oppression, set free by sharing and accepting it all.

[He took down his bandcamp and put up a download-all-my-old-stuff link]

A physics student at peace, Eau Claire’s Deimos Phobos wrangles together a short, but instantly memorable ride through clouds and consciousness. With the help of Elan Mccallum, Lindsey Etzkorn, and Adelyn Rose [whose album Mezzanine is up there with the best of 2012], feelings is both intrapersonal and dance-in-a-sweaty-crowd-able which kinda reminds me of those MJ MJ‘s good mood tapes.

We were delighted to receive an email from Decoder man Dwight who was quick to sent over a couple releases from his trustworthy label imprint Crash Symbols. The first tape was Nomadic Firs‘ self-titled debut. When I sat down to write some words about the tape, a wafting psychedelia came over me and tape stories was created.

Nomadic Firs – Cover Bombs

Walking a case of the locally brewed summer ale down a friend’s dock, passing aging wood to the tune of branches brushed with a river breeze and flip-flop claps, in the water a boat features warm smiles. The boat takes off north. The clouds are sparse but dense enough to lend out shade when needed most. The motor kicks into high gear and we begin to fly over bridges, making small talk with seagulls who also came into their own after a brief stint away from the herd.

Nomadic Firs – In The Morning

The sun set an hour ago but the tank is still half full. The clouds act as lawn chairs and jokes are told and tents are made. Life is lucid. The sun told us so when morning came. When the morning came the boat was gone. Never turn your back to a flock of shifty-eyed seagulls. The only way home was down so we dove. Terminal velocity meant nothing and the view was great – people waved; they looked so significant and were all the same. The waves broke our fall and the seagulls, feeling guilty and offering a well-seasoned platter of mahi-mahi, returned the boat. Nice guys really.

Pick up the tape and digital download for a measly $5 on Crash Symbols’ Bandcamp.

The second tape from Crash Symbols is Some Ember‘s Hotel of Lost Light and will up next week.

A major theme here is Florida’s local music scene and the atmospheres it conjures up. The incredible musical talent on this odd peninsula inspires a majority of what you see and deserves credit.

Much like Wednesday’s soft dip into chaos by way of Public Spreads the News, the quick to blossom songwriting technique of Gainesville resident Sebastian aka Tres Pelo transpires best in one, fluent sweep. Le Lo Lai contains a refreshing spice of salsa samples and pure instrumentation that blends together into a smooth collection of Latin-inspired, psych grooves. And check out TPs newer release Up N’ Adam for some equally impressive, more somber work [especially ‘Mt. Pelée 1906’, ‘Mt. Pelée 1906’ is wonderful].

A potent allergy to apples and oranges arose in transition; how sharp the knife only depends on credentials. To slice through the indirect mist that surrounds direct cohesion requires drive, better yet persistence. This is the imprint laid on entities existing far from daily routine. Through a debated ebb & flow, this is how the Public Spreads the News.

The cohesion of genres presented over the past year here at Too Many Carpets remains unclear and we will attempt to explain ourselves over the next couple weeks; in the end I hope there is no flow chart and chaos exists as a reflection of self. Nothing is utter chaos as stillness remains intact even as roadside shambles, but chaos is ever-present and it’s harmonic. A soft dip into chaos comes from Lou Nutrient – available on Bandcamp for free courtesy of the stellar Ailanthus Recordings – the under twenty-minute electro-tour cruises through tepid streams off shot by a spring-fed leisure pool.

While on the subject of AMDISCS and people who used to live in North Florida, the brotherly duo of Tonstartssbandht are re-releasing Sinkhole, Storm, and Sandwich and Hymn on a single cassette on AMDISICS, Arbutus recordsNeen Records. A well deserved feat for Andy and Edwin White, as they live in different cities and create an extraordinary passionate live performance.

Cleveland vagabonds Cloud Nothings wooed ears with their self-titled collection of indescribably catchy lo-fi rifts I’ve caught myself swerving through traffic to. If there’s anything the stream of Attack on Memory illustrates, it’s their obvious stray away from their former light lo-fi sound. The available singles, namely No Future/No Past, hint at a progression towards a heavier, rawer array of noise. The Steve Albini produced album, only eight songs in length, has post-hardcore tendencies and a stronger part from leadman Dylan Baldi. Stream Attack on Memory on Soundcloud and pick it up from Carpark Records Tuesday.

I caught a glimse of Porcelain Raft on tour last October: one man / one machine / one guitar / loud enough to put the speakers in overdrive. The sounds took a path uncommon, emmulating a style of dance tunes heavy in reverb and soft at heart. Strange Weekend is the highly inticipated debut album from the man behind the raft, Mauro Remiddi. A man with an impressive collection of self-released EPs and a knack for soothing vocals. The debut full-length spells out his surreal progression in a sophisticated, mind-bending kind of way. Stream Strange Weekend on Hype Machine and snag a copy from Secretly Canadian.

PS Chairlift is back.

“Chris can’t spell for beans, and Drew is super popular and hip, so I [Abi] (the bookish, nerdy type) get the pleasure of sending this email.”

A warm email sent from Detroit’s charmingly unusual trio Tandem Bicycle enclosed details of their new album entitled Bermund▲ and subsequently soundtracked my afternoon. And as the album walked along side, the song-writing stood out above the chilled dance carriage it rode on. In no way is it typical, but it’s a style you recognize anyway. Connected without your usual connectors, each track stands apart from one another like a group of friends; you have your own life, but these kids are cool.

Most days are spent coasting through singles upon singles, but there’s something about an on-all-boards, killer release. Whether the low-flying vibrations match the world around or you find yourself gazing out your window, lost to the time, like the come-to after a quick hitting hallucinogen. There are days and then there’s what lets us live. Gander below and click the albums for more.

The odd mind of Mike Collins and his genre-bending project Run DMT have been out of the public eye since the what-did-I-just-fall-in-love-with release of Bong Voyage last fall. According to Altered Zones, the man traveled our great country by freight train during that time and is now settling back down to focus on a variety of projects. Enter Culture Dealer. Aside from Run DMT, his apparent focus has been placed towards this shop of sorts up in Baltimore.

As you can see for the video, this is no normal dealer. In fact, if that collage tinkled your fancy, Culture Dealer has a VHS complete with “mental maps, warped perspectives, dream exploits, nose cameras, audio-visual experiments and much more.” If you can get your hands on a VHS player, the $7 is well worth the experience.

On their website, Run DMT has his first release in over a year up for grabs! Exclusively on cassette, DREAMS features eleven tracks written and recorded throughout his journeys from the Massachusetts shoreline to a Rainbow Gathering in Tennessee. You can stream and download ‘ROMANTIC’ and ‘Dreaming’ to get a perspective on the latest evolution. The root spirits remain; his steps retraced, renewed with a learned perspective and a shuttle launch of possibilities.
